Mondays at Zenda. Spanish-language narrative on Mondays. This Monday, in this instance, about The Year of the Snake, the latest novel by Argentine writer Camila Fabbri (Buenos Aires, 1989), published in Spain by the publisher Anagrama. At the outset there is a building, and an unexpected stimulus that unsettles daily life. From those two ingredients, Fabbri manages to craft a narrative in which the force of realism arrives through estrangement: by densifying the atmosphere of her prose and making it, in her own way, tangible, The Year of the Snake succeeds in approaching the thresholds of the threatening without recourse to the fantastical. The horror, in her fiction, is always forged within the boundaries of the real.
But what begins as an olfactory assault soon becomes a source of unease: what happens behind the closed door of the young woman who has always seemed to inhabit a surface of absolute calm? In the tainted atmosphere of the apartment, among models of green spaces and gossip magazines, there floats something more than the trace of an absence: a crawling suspicion, a reptilian, animal presence, exotic and lethal that might, perhaps, seep further. Camila Fabbri builds in The Year of the Snake a novel of domestic horror and psychological tension about the environmental dangers of human relationships: those invisible threats that arise in affectionate bonds, in urban solitude, and in the voyeurism of neighbors who watch others’ tragedy as if it were a reality show.
