The publisher themselves notes, regarding the book: Estructuras Invisibles S. L. is a novel about work. Not a novel whose theme is work, but a novel that dares to confront one of literature’s most arduous tasks: to narrate work, that hell of repetition and sameness.
Bentor Marrero is a truck driver who experiences his own life in a state between astonishment and dissociation. The accidental death of one of his fellow workers is not here a mere deus ex machina, but a cog that forces us to face a reality we usually prefer to ignore: the invisible thread that links the status of workers to the penal code. After the crash, Bentor sets out on a sort of onward flight, guarded by the ghost of the deceased man, while he continues to drive a gigantic truck that fails to meet the minimum safety standards necessary to transport enormous structures across the island of Tenerife.
With a mastery rarely found in a first novel, Jiménez Pozo crafts a raw and merciless tale that threads precise stitches through the knots of a vast network: exploitation, the judicial system, punitive zeal, the overwhelming confusion between work and existence. Estructuras Invisibles S. L. resists being trapped within that network: it is a brisk novel, with a style that grips and pays close attention to the speech of its characters, who stand out through their own idiolects. With touches of black humor, we are faced with a text that feels both new and, at the same time, part of a long tradition — a contemporary Lazarillo de Tormes, an involuntary rewriting of La familia de Pascual Duarte — whose protagonist speaks for himself and places us, the readers, in the position of judges of his guilt and of the system’s own faults.
