The first two volumes of the global Japanese phenomenon The Apothecary Diaries, by Hyuganatsu, arrive in Spanish bookstores in the hands of Distrito Manga (Penguin Random House), after more than 57 million copies sold worldwide.
The Apothecary Diaries began in Japan as an online novel and, thanks to its success, made the leap to print, with illustrations by Touko Shino. Since then, the story has crossed borders and formats, with several adaptations and an anime series that has boosted its international popularity by winning over a new generation of readers thanks to “an irresistible formula that blends mystery, palace intrigue, and slow-burning romance”, according to the publisher in a press release, in which they also highlight “a strong reception” in the volumes’ pre-orders.
The protagonist of the novels is Maomao, a young apothecary sold as a maid to the imperial palace, where she discovers that behind its luxurious walls lie mysteries, conspiracies, and dangerous secrets. Thanks to her knowledge of poisons and medicines, she will begin solving cases that no one else can explain, which will attract the attention of Jinshi, an influential court official.
According to the publisher, this “irresistible combination” has captivated a broader audience than the typical reader of Asian literature, becoming a true mass literary phenomenon. The Apothecary Diaries already counts two manga adaptations, published in Spain by the publishers Devir and Ivrea, and a successful Japanese animated series currently on air. In addition, the franchise will leap to the big screen with an animated film that will premiere in Japan on 11 December 2026 and will later arrive in Spanish cinemas.
On the other hand, Hyuganatsu will visit Spain on 5 and 6 December, coinciding with Manga Barcelona, where they will participate in activities and signing sessions.
