CLA membership voted for dissolution of the organization at a special meeting of the members on January 27, 2016 predicated on the creation of a Canadian federation of library associations. In follow up, our President, Sandra Singh has communicated with CLA members here: http://cla.ca/wp-content/uploads/Letter-to-membership-on-dissolution-CLA-colleagues.pdf.
While Student Chapters are not explicitly mentioned in her letter, the intent of the letter carries through in that she has stated “We need to determine – with the help of the Federation – what responsibilities of CLA fit within the scope of the Federation, which activities might better fit with another association or organization, and which activities will wrap with the final dissolution”.
It will be the responsibility of the new Federation to decide whether Student Chapters fall within its ambit. CLA will communicate regularly to its membership throughout the process of winding down and dissolution in order to keep the membership up to date on progress. It will be the Federation, once established, that will communicate with the community at large regarding its plans.
As a result, CLA Student Chapters are welcome and encouraged to continue working until dissolution however the association will not be able to consider applications for new Student Chapters.
In March of 1999 CLA/ACB’s first Student Chapter was officially launched at the University of Western Ontario. Since that time Student Chapters have been launched at the University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, University of Alberta, McGill University, Dalhousie University, the Nova Scotia Community College Institute of Technology Campus and the University of Ottawa.
What is a Student Chapter?
A Student Chapter is a group of library and information students that are CLA members, interested in getting involved, networking with the library and information community before graduation. Chapters consist of CLA Student members and includes a convenor, chosen from among the students, that acts as a liaison between the Chapter and the Canadian Library Association in Ottawa.
The Student Chapters plan events, lectures, meetings and social events to encourage networking and to promote the CLA to their peers. Many events have guest speakers many of whom are prominent leaders in the library community.
