About the Wood Buffalo Regional Library:

The Wood Buffalo Regional Library, located in the heart of Fort McMurray at MacDonald Island Park, brings the community together. From our diverse material collection to programs and services, there is an experience for all levels and backgrounds.

Position Description:

The Library Director is responsible not only for all day to day operations of library services in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo but for advocating for the Library and for managing relationships with community and governmental partners.

As the Library Director you will be responsible for advising the Board on potential strategic opportunities for library services in the Regional Municipality; developing and executing plans to fulfil the strategic direction from the Board of Directors; managing all day to day operations of the Library; attracting and developing staff; and developing relationships, and liaising with governmental, community and educational partners; and managing the financial health of the Library.

Responsibilities include:

The Directors’ responsibilities falls under 9 broad categories. The following is a non-exhaustive list of the primary responsibilities the Director will be expected to accomplish:

Board Relations

  • Report to the Board of Directors, which has the legal responsibility for governing the library and hiring the Director;
  • Organize and plan Board meeting agendas;
  • Notify Board members of meetings and committee meetings as appropriate;
  • Attend all Board of Directors meetings, unless excused by the Chairperson;
  • Prepare regular reports to keep the Board of Directors appraised of library activities, events, problems and concerns;
  • Formulate and recommend policies for Board approval;
  • Implement Board approved policies;

Operational Planning

  • Continually evaluate Library services in relation to the community needs;
  • Identify future needs for library services and the resources to meet those needs;
  • Prepare the Library’s Plan of Service;

Financial Management

  • Prepare the draft annual budget for Board consideration;
  • Present the budget, along with the Board to the RMWB;
  • Supervise all expenditure;
  • Prepare bills for approval by the Board;
  • Participate in and implement audit recommendations approved by the Board;

Library Team Management

  • Review staff positions periodically and revise job duties and descriptions;
  • Recruit new team members;
  • Discipline, terminate, and promote team members as necessary;
  • Schedule and supervise operations;
  • Establish workplace policies and procedures for an inclusive workplace in line with the Library’s mission and values;
  • Provide professional development to employees
  • Manage the performance of team members;

Public and Patron Relations

  • Advocate for and promote the library;
  • Work to establish effective communications through news releases, newsletters, and other appropriate media;
  • Establish effective relationships with schools, community partners and the media;
  • Represent the library to community, civic and other groups in matters relating to the library;
  • Monitor public perception of the library;
  • Respond to patrons complaints and public criticism;
  • Respond to the unique needs of the community as those needs change;

Program Delivery

  • Work with Library team members develop new programs to meet patron and community needs;
  • Monitor program feedback and success, managing program resources accordingly;

Collections

  • Supervise the selection, acquisition and processing of library materials to meet the public need within established library selection policies and budgetary limitations;

Facilities Management

  • Supervise the facility; arranging for maintenance and cleaning as required;

Professional Development

  • Keep abreast of developing trends in libraries, including attending conferences and other networking events as appropriate.

As the successful candidate you will have:

  • Demonstrated success in libraries and library cultures;
  • Demonstrated leadership of staff
  • Demonstrated success in financial management;
  • Demonstrated project management skills;
  • Experience growing, developing and managing organizational culture;
  • Experience developing and managing employees to productive, positive outcomes;
  • Demonstrated experience understanding and translating strategic vision into operational plans;
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with the public, governmental, community and business stakeholders, including public speaking.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Library Branch Manager or 3-5 years of experience as a Sr. Manager in a larger library system managing a mid-sized team.
  • Post-secondary education in business with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a library setting, including 5 years of experience in leadership positions
